The recent REA’s June Encore Auction saw a surge in set building enthusiasm, with high-end complete sets stealing the spotlight. Among the top ten items sold, graded sets stood tall, with six of them classified as complete. Leading the pack were the Topps Baseball complete sets from 1963, 1960, and 1961, fetching remarkable prices of $75,000, $66,000, and $54,000, respectively. These collections are ranked among the elite on the PSA Set Registry. Additionally, complete sets from 1950 Bowman, 1964 Topps, and 1965 Topps Baseball each found new homes for $37,200.
The auction featured a total of 3,278 lots and garnered over $1.7 million in sales through a staggering 67,300 bids.
A standout item that attracted significant attention was a 1970-1971 Topps Basketball #160 Jerry West card graded PSA GEM MINT 10. Selling for $54,000, this sale set a new record for the card in any grade, marking it as a prized possession. This sale also comes timely after the passing of the Basketball Hall of Famer, who recently left a legacy at the age of 86.
Some other notable sales during the auction included a 1914 E145 Cracker Jack #30 Ty Cobb SGC FAIR 1.5 card fetching $38,400 (a grade record), a 1957 Topps #95 Mickey Mantle PSA NM-MT+ 8.5 card also reaching $38,400, and a rare gem like the 1921 Exhibits Babe Ruth card graded PSA VG+ 3.5 selling for $16,200, among others.
REA President Brian Dwyer commented on the successful auction saying, “This auction reinforced the strong results for top-quality graded sets lately as well as the consistent appetite for vintage staples and hard-to-find rarities.” He also shared the excitement for the upcoming Summer Catalog Auction, scheduled to kick off on July 23, promising a collection that will captivate collectors.
As the anticipation builds for the Summer Catalog Auction, REA invites interested collectors to request a catalog via their website. Additionally, the company will have a presence at booth #6032 during The National event in Cleveland, where they will showcase a selection of items from the upcoming Summer Auction.
